Director, Foundation Communications: American Association for Cancer Research, Inc.(AACR)

Job Summary

Working under the leadership of the Executive Director, and in partnership with colleagues in the Foundation, the Director of Foundation Communications will develop, implement and maintain a range of communications tools in support of the Foundation’s growth strategies. The Director creates original content and serves as editor for Foundation materials which are aimed at inspiring and engaging philanthropy, strategic partnerships, and related funding of AACR among targeted constituent groups. Additionally, the Director works in partnership with communications, public relations and marketing colleagues within the larger AACR operation to leverage organizational resources and tools to maximize opportunities and disseminate AACR Foundation communications and Foundation messaging.

Position Description and Responsibilities

•Regularly partners with AACR Foundation team members to support their communication needs within the individual, corporate and Foundation fundraising programs; as such, researches, drafts, edits and produces a range of communications products, including collateral for events

•Develops and coordinates a comprehensive communications process and calendar to appropriately and consistently promote interaction with and recognition of donors at all levels

•Manages and maintains the Foundation’s communications resources, including electronic files, templates, and related content to provide comprehensive and strategic communications support across the team, and to ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging across all materials and tools

•Serves as lead writer and originator of compelling content for presentation materials, proposals, stewardship reports and other communications utilized by staff who manage relationships with donors

•Oversees the production of regular and unique communications in various formats, such as newsletters or magazines, brochures, appeals for support, Foundation ads, donor features and stories

•Proactively and regularly collaborates with AACR Communications and Marketing teams, to identify and leverage opportunities throughout AACR activities and materials to advance AACR Foundation objectives, as well as to partner/advise on content and design for distinct Foundation communications

•Represents the Foundation in internal marketing and communications-wide meetings

•Helps direct digital communication initiatives, including website, newsletter and social media—both AACR Foundation and the AACR organizational websites

•Works with AACR communications and public relations in the creation and timing of press releases celebrating inspirational gifts to the AACR Foundation

•Proactively researches and recommends content and strategies to support and advance AACR Foundation goals and awareness

•Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Position Requirements

•Bachelor’s degree required

•Advanced degree preferred

•Degree in a related area of study preferred, such as communications, writing or journalism

•Minimum of five (5) years relevant professional work experience in a development setting, writing and editing, and creating strategic communication materials

•Understands a full range of media and possesses the ability to create content to meet distinct communications objectives for targeted audiences in support of Foundation fundraising strategies

•Ability to present information in a compelling manner

•Capacity to recognize and seize opportunities

•Excellent project and time management skills

•Ability to handle multiple priorities at one time

•Detail-oriented and highly organized

•Ability to interact proactively and collaboratively with colleagues at all levels

•Solid technical background

•Exceptional verbal, written and editing skills

•Experienced in social media technologies and online social marketing

•Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and creative software applications

•Experienced in donor communications and writing in context of science or health-related organization highly desirable
