About The Philadelphia Youth Network:

The Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN) is an intermediary organization dedicated to connecting systems and leveraging resources to equip young people for academic achievement, economic opportunity and personal success. To achieve this mission, we manage and support large‐scale, cross‐sector initiatives to develop targeted programs that allow early access to educational and employment services for underserved youth in the region.

Our 15 years of experience designing, nurturing and sustaining cross‐sector approaches demonstrate our unique, valuable role in improving education and employment outcomes. To that end, we organize our work around four core functions:

  1. Convening and leading cross‐sector partnerships and initiatives that enhance opportunities available to Philadelphia youth
  2. Connecting the necessary resources, systems and investments to ensure citywide coordination of youth serving initiatives
  3. Measuring impact and evaluating progress by collecting and analyzing data, promoting continuous improvement
  4. Sustaining impact by influencing policy, building public awareness and maximizing the impact of youth serving systems through collective effort

About Communications and Marketing: The Communications and Marketing Department works to raise awareness of PYN and its prominence in the fields of youth workforce development, education, research and collective impact. To accomplish this, we lead the organization’s branding efforts and collaborate with internal and external partners and the media with the goal of creating adequate and appropriate messaging that is consistent with organizational standards.

General Description: The Director, Communications and Marketing is responsible for PYN’s communications and marketing functions, including internal and external communications and managing PYN’s brand. The role requires a broad range of communications, media relations, social media, marketing, event planning and project management skills.

Essential Functions:


  • Manage the creation and implementation of an organizational-wide communications plan
  • Lead working groups to plan, coordinate, execute and distribute original communications products and publications related to initiatives, programs and events
  • Collaborate with program managers to provide direction and technical assistance to provider network for communications activities related their PYN-managed programs
  • Work with leadership to facilitate internal communications vehicles
  • Lead public relations efforts with other departments including events, employer recruitment campaigns and media outreach. Oversee efforts from planning and collateral design to implementation and press follow-up
  • Ensure timely publication of news via PYN’s websites, publication and external media
  • Overseemedia tracking efforts (Weekly searches of relevant media coverage; clipping, saving and formatting articles and entering them into a database; running reports; and creating press kits.
  • Writing and editing (Press releases, grant proposals, website content, research summaries, letters to funders and elected officials, presentations and other publications)


  • Lead the marketing efforts of the organization
  • Setting the vision for and creating a series of three or four annual reports, incorporating new technologies and best-practices
  • Establish production calendars, in conjunction with requesting departments
  • Lead the effort, in collaboration with IS, to maintain websites. Work with the departments to update content in relation to the programs they manage
  • Develop a strategy to review, proofread and approve materials, presentations and online information about PYN to assure that material developed is factually and technically accurate

Event Management

  • Develop a vision and a strategy for coordinating PYN events
  • Lead the planning efforts for events with key internal stakeholders
  • Provide oversight for the annual Breakfast of WorkReady Champions and the WorkReady Expo


  • Set vision and goals for the Communications and Marketing department
  • Manage the Communications and Marketing team, including a Graphic Designer, Associate, consultants and interns supporting communication and marketing efforts
  • Develop and manage the department budget
  • Participate in and lead various cross-functional teams at PYN
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Education, Experience & Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience, including at least three managing staff
  • Knowledge of local, regional and national education reform and workforce development issues and strategies
  • Demonstration of a broad range of communications, media relations, social media, event planning, web design, digital communications and project management skills
  • Proven track record of initiating, cultivating and managing relationships with key stakeholders
  • Willingness to engage, learn and grow continuously
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to employ flexibility and creativity in the face of ambiguity and challenge
  • Able to take ownership and drive activities to completion
  • Experience in a fast-paced, dynamic and complex organization
    • Successful completion of an FBI clearance, criminal background check and child abuse clearances (required of all PYN employees)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including visual presentation of information and high level command of AP Style, grammar, spelling and word usage
  • Ability to translate field-specific language and ideas into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists
  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher is required
  • Proficiency in professional design software preferred (especially Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Working knowledge of HTML and web design best-practices
  • Extremely well-organized, with attention to accuracy and detail
