Director of Development: Chester Charter School for the Arts/The Chester Fund

Introduction

In 2014, the Chester Charter School for the Arts (CCSA) in Chester City, PA had the third-highest academic improvement among 800 district and charter schools in the five-county Philadelphia region. Highlights of CCSA’s arts-integrated curriculum include a comprehensive reading program led by five reading specialists, and full-time dance, music, theater and visual art instruction.  CCSA currently serves 420 students in grades K-8. In September 2015, the CCSA High School will open for grade 9, adding a grade each year through grade 12.

The Chester Fund for Education and the Arts (TCF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that raises substantial private funds, augmenting public allotments, to create CCSA’s stellar academic program.

Job Purpose

The Director of Development will (1) launch a multi-million-dollar Campaign for CCSA to create a state-of-the-art learning environment serving grades K-12, (2) direct the TCF Development Office, and (3) lead TCF in the creation and implementation of an organizational strategic plan.

Organizational Structure/Working Relationships

  • Reports to TCF Board Chair and works closely with TCF Board of Directors, CCSA Board of Trustees, and CCSA Head of School.
  • Supervises two full-time TCF staff:  Director of Annual Giving and Administrative Assistant.
  • Oversees all contract personnel, which may include PR/Communications and/or Grant Writing.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and execution of targeted cultivation and solicitation plans for corporate and major-donor gifts, and foundation and government grants.
  • Provide primary leadership in the formulation and implementation of the Campaign for CCSA, including developing and managing the campaign budget.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising plans to support annual budgetary obligations to CCSA, working in collaboration with the Director of Annual Giving.
  • Create, oversee and manage TCF’s operating budget, in collaboration with business-management contractor.
  • Write foundational pieces for key TCF/CCSA documents such as principal grant proposals and grant reports; review and approve grant documents and other publications before their distribution.
  • Provide support to TCF and CCSA board members, CCSA Head of School, TCF Founder, and Director of Annual Giving in fulfilling their fundraising responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, the education of underserved youth.
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience at an executive level in development and fundraising with a nonprofit organization, including demonstrated success in campaign design and implementation, soliciting major gifts, grant writing, and institutional planning and budgeting.
  • Superior oral and written skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills.  Priority-setting and time-management are paramount
  • Connections in the philanthropic arena, especially in the Philadelphia region.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with boards and staff, and to build positive relationships with targeted individuals and groups of varied backgrounds.
  • Familiarity and facility with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and DonorSnap or similar donor software.
