Summary of Principal Responsibilities

The Human Migration & Mobility Director works to increase the effectiveness and impact of AFSC’s immigrant rights work by overseeing implementation of the HMM Strategic Plan, and leading development of periodic Plan revisions and updates.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Human Migration and Mobility Director are as follows:

  1. Identify, develop and coordinate strategic approaches, collaborative projects and campaigns in support of the HMM Strategic Plan. Monitor and report progress on Plan goals.
  2. Consult with staff in the HMM Network, US Consultative Group, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Board Program Committee and Regional Executive Committees on Plan refinement and implementation.
  3. Develop avenues and opportunities for group discussion on issues targeted in the HMM Strategic Plan. Facilitate analysis and sharing of lessons learned during Plan implementation.
  4. Demonstrate leadership and program expertise in coalitions, conferences, meetings and media interviews on issues related to the HMM Strategic Plan. Identify opportunities for AFSC staff to serve as spokespeople on pressing HMM issues.
  5. Seek out the perspectives of individuals and organizations outside of AFSC, including immigrant community stakeholders, program committee members, policymakers and others, to better inform AFSC’s perspective on immigration issues.
  6. Identify target audiences and potential allies to broaden the base of support for immigrant rights and link the immigrants’ rights movement to other struggles.
  7. Work collaboratively with the Communications Department to develop an external communications plan on issues targeted in the HMM Strategic Plan, and to assist with its implementation. Provide Communications with timely information on migration work for inclusion on AFSC’s website, in Quaker Action, and for the AFSC Annual Report.
  8. Assist Development with identification of funding opportunities, and assist with development of funding proposals for collaborative work related to the HMM Strategic Plan. Meet with donors and carry out other fundraising tasks as needed.
  9. Maintain comprehensive, in-depth understanding of core issues in the field of Human Migration and Mobility, including the global context, social and political trends, in the US and internationally.
  10. Other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Baccalaureate degree in a field related to AFSC work (e.g. sociology, public policy etc.). Exceptional work experience may be accepted in lieu of the degree.

Experience: At least ten years of experience in campaign development and coordination, strategic plan development and implementation, and work on immigrant rights issues. At least 5 years of experience developing grant proposals, and in budget development and monitoring.

Other Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. Wide and sophisticated knowledge of migration and immigration issues, and of immigrant communities.
  2. Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.
  3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and orally. Fluency in another language spoken by immigrants served by AFSC programs is highly desirable.
  4. Previous experience working in a social justice organization highly preferred.
  5. Ease in stimulating communication and collaboration among diverse and geographically scattered programs, identifying common needs and purposes among them. Good listening skills are essential.
  6. Ability to travel frequently to visit US programs, meet with governance committees, allies and partners, and to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  7. Capacity to exercise sound judgment in representing AFSC in coalitions and networks.
  8. Proven ability to persuade and motivate others.
  9. Ability to plan and facilitate convenings for groups of varying sizes.
  10. Ability to work well under pressure and set priorities as well as adapt to changing situations.
  11. Excellent computer skills.
  12. Initiative, creativity, patience, drive, energy, and a sense of humor

  14. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse audiences.

Compensation: Salary range starts at $60,440 – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
