Development Manager: Wagner Free Institute of Science

The Wagner Free Institute of Science is a natural history museum and educational institution dedicated to free public education in science. Founded in 1855, the Wagner serves a diverse audience through a range of museum, library and educational programs for children and adults. In addition to teaching contemporary science, the Wagner also operates as an historic site, preserving a nationally important example of a Victorian science museum and offering programs and site interpretation on the history of science.

The Development Manager is a full time, professional position that participates in all aspects of the Wagner’s development program, with an emphasis on individual giving and donor relations.  This position works closely with the Executive Director to help plan and implement annual and long-range development goals and coordinates the Wagner’s fundraising activities. Responsibilities include managing individual giving initiatives; coordinating annual fundraising and member events; identifying and cultivating major gift donors; maintaining the donor database; managing donor communications and relations; and coordinating the Board’s fundraising efforts.  The Development Manager also supports the grant process (managed by a Grant Writer) and member/donor cultivation. She/he will be a member of a flexible and creative organizational culture that encourages a team approach to program development, problem solving and collaboration across the institution.


  • Three to five years experience in nonprofit fundraising, with an emphasis on individual giving, preferably in museums,  educational or cultural institutions
  • BS or BA degree, advanced degree in related field desirable
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and a high degree of comfort communicating with Board, staff, volunteers, donors and community members
  • Strong computer skills, specifically in word processing, spreadsheet and database
  • Raiser’s Edge experience (or equivalent) required
  • Commitment to team process and fostering a collaborative working environment
  • Enthusiasm for Wagner’s mission, interest in science, history, historic preservation
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks without losing attention to fine detail
  • Highly organized, motivated and capable of independent project management
