JOB SUMMARY

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is currently seeking a bright and motivated Executive Director to join our leadership team. This individual will be responsible for driving program and business success across the organization and ensuring that the Society’s operations are consistent with its mission, vision and core values. The Executive Director will also be responsible for leading a highly motivated and accountable leadership team in strategic planning, organizing and directing several key program and operations functions, and defining and achieving goals.

A successful candidate must demonstrate a proven record of driving successful strategic initiatives, achieving high level and ambitious program and budget goals, aligning infrastructure and technology needs with organizational goals, and effective responsive team leadership. SHM’s Executive Director will be a skilled and emotionally intelligent collaborator and actively engage and inspire the Society’s staff, key leaders and Board of Directors.

This is a full-time exempt position with competitive compensation and benefits.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Organizational leadership
    • Serve on SHM’s senior leadership team, driving organizational success and change required to manage SHM’s growth
    • Report to the Chief Executive Officer and serve as primary staff leader in SHM’s Philadelphia office
    • Proactively identify key improvement areas within operations and business strategy and work with staff across the organization to successfully complete projects and initiatives
  • Operations and infrastructure
    • Ensure day-to-day success of SHM’s current operations, including IT infrastructure and facilities
    • Manage SHM’s relationship with our current landlord and, if required, identify and manage and new office requirements or specifications
  • Program management and strategy
    • Ensure financial and programmatic success of SHM’s Annual Meeting, Leadership Academies, and any other SHM meetings, including reviewing key metrics and providing leadership related to program improvement and change
    • Ensure financial and programmatic success of SHM’s digital learning programs, including reviewing key metrics and providing leadership related to program improvement and change
    • Ensure financial and programmatic success of SHM’s Center for Hospital Innovation and Improvement, including reviewing key metrics and providing leadership related to program improvement and change
    • Monitor and create appropriate program evaluation strategies across programs
    • In collaboration with staff leads, complete timely budgets and provide regular financial overview of all key revenue and expense lines
  • Business development and partnerships
    • In collaboration with key program staff and SHM’s business development director, create process for strategic development that align with SHM’s mission and goals and identify fundraising strategies that support this strategy
    • Working with staff leadership, identify and build relationships with key corporate, organizational and foundation partners to maintain and expand funding
  • Financial and budget management
    • Working with the Finance Director, build and execute a yearly budget that aligns with SHM’s business goals
    • Build regular reporting structures to provide financial intelligence to key business areas, utilize existing software and business modeling to make strategic recommendations related to revenue and expense management
  • Staff development and management
    • Manage a diverse team of staff, including Directors of key departments, to achieve organizational and personal development goals.
    • Serve as a mentor to all staff, working to enhance communication, professionalism and achievement of SHM’s mission and objectives
    • Complete regular performance reviews on all relevant staff, working to build and grow staff, while addressing performance issues in a timely and structured manner
QUALIFICATIONS
  • An interest in today’s dynamic healthcare sector, especially hospital care, public health and quality improvement
  • Masters degree in business administration, public health, or other related field
  • Ten plus years of relevant experience, including:
    • Creation and execution of strategic initiatives
    • Participation in business development initiatives, including interaction with industry or foundation funders
    • Active high level, large program management and evaluation
    • Strategic deployment of innovative IT initiatives
    • Evaluation and overhaul of organizational infrastructure and processes to create efficiencies and better organizational management
    • Vendor management and contract negotiation
    • Management, mentoring and development of teams
    • Experience reporting to a Chief Executive Officer or equivalent
    • Demonstrated capacity for leadership and ability to enhance staff productivity and encourage stretch performance in alignment with organizational goals.
    • Significant supervisorial experience including developing skilled and dedicated employees
    • Ability to convey complex ideas, with strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Be a strategic systems thinker, problem solver and collaborator
    • Strong ethical core
    • Excellent project and program management skills
