Executive Director: Gearing Up

Gearing Up is a vibrant 6 1/2 year old, fiscally-sound nonprofit organization that seeks a new entrepreneurial leader eager to impact the lives of women in transition in the Philadelphia area. The Executive Director will lead an organization that has supported more than 1,000 women who are confronting drug and alcohol addiction, domestic violence, and/or homelessness by offering cycling as an intervention that leads to social, emotional, and physical transformation and supports healthy social communities. The ED will apply her/his leadership experience and appreciation for Gearing Up’s unique mission to guide the organization through its next stage of growth and development.

The ED is responsible for the long-term sustainability of the mission as well as its overall operations, administration, programs, and funding. The position reports to a board of directors and oversees a staff of five employees, as well as an active pool of over 150 volunteers, and a network of community agencies, donors and friends established to ensure positive impact on the women Gearing Up serves. The ED will be expected to promote an organizational culture of learning and collaboration that fosters diversity and inclusion, equity, and accountability.


  • Along with at least 10 years of professional experience in a relevant field, a minimum of 5 years of management experience (ideally in the nonprofit sector), preferably within an organization with a $250K+ annual budget.
  • Proven ability to influence and drive organizational evolution while aligning the business model with the mission, strategic goals, and capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising trends along with a track record of success in fund development through various techniques (including grant writing, donor cultivation, and event management) or equivalent.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with ability to build effective long-term relationships while identifying and developing productive alliances with diverse constituencies.
  • Professional and/or volunteer experience in working with low-income populations and knowledge of women’s issues, particularly with respect to homelessness, re-entry/recovery.
  • Experience in building, managing, and motivating a diverse team of staff and volunteers.
  • Experience in program/project management and impact evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging, managing, and collaborating with a nonprofit board of directors.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and collaboration with an understanding of the economic and cultural opportunities and challenges within urban environments.
  • Evidence-based thinker with entrepreneurial energy and proven business acumen, integrity, and passion for the mission.
  • Ardent believer in the transformational benefits of exercise and ability/willingness to ride a bicycle.
