External Relations Manager: Benefits Data Trust

Benefits Data Trust (BDT), is a rapidly expanding nationally not-for-profit organization with the mission of transforming how individuals in need access public benefits. As the organization grows from serving 40,000 people in need each year to over 100,000 people in need each year, we need strong team members to help us maintain our quality, expand into new states, and diversify our funding sources. BDT is seeking a talented, innovative and solutions- oriented individual to serve as its inaugural External Relations Manager.

Position Summary:

Benefits Data Trust has a budget of $12 million, comprised of funding from primarily governmental and philanthropic sources. BDT is a transformational organization at a pivotal juncture in its growth. We are looking for a creative individual who can help manage the External Relations department as we expand our funding base, embark on our first capital campaign, and strengthen our communications efforts.

The External Relations Manager will leverage diverse and proven development strategies to help BDT grow to scale. S/he will manage a team of three coordinators, two External Relations Coordinators and one Communications Coordinator. The team will be responsible for researching and developing funding proposals, developing appropriate messages to engage the organization’s internal and external target audiences, and actively promoting the work of BDT to its broad set of stakeholders.

The External Relations Manager will report to the Director of External Relations. Specific responsibilities include:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and execute the organization’s External Relations Plan, including the Communications and Fundraising Plans. Work with the Director of External Relations to update as required;
  • Manage grant seeking, including proposal research, proposal writing, and timely submission;
  • Maintain existing funding by ensuring accurate and timely reporting;
  • Manage BDT’s major donor gifts program/annual campaign;
  • Cultivate relationships with current and potential donors, including foundations, corporations, and individuals;
  • Staff Advisory Board fundraising efforts, as required;
  • Coordinate special events;
  • Manage development of BDT publications, ensuring message is on brand and accurate;
  • Manage BDT website ensuring accurate, timely, and concise content;
  • Work closely with the Director of External Relations to aid the team in meeting the goals of the Department;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Master’s Degree in related field is a plus;
  • 5-7 years experience in development, including major donor solicitation and successful proposal writing;
  • Proven track record in fundraising
  • Experience cultivating and managing relationships with media outlets and vendors
  • A self-starter
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate dense text into graphic representations
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of graphic design software, including the Adobe Suite and Microsoft Publisher, a plus
  • Must be a team player and have a sense of humor

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience plus comprehensive benefits package.
