Director of Development: Pennsylvania Humanities Council

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) connects Pennsylvanians to each other through stories, ideas, and experiences that can change lives and transform communities. PHC champions and redefines the role the humanities play in educating citizens and strengthening community through programs that create pathways for learning and creativity, spark dialogue and civic engagement, and encourage diversity of expression.

An independent partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, PHC is part of a network of 56 state humanities councils that spans the nation and U.S. jurisdictions. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will directly manage all development activities to meet revenue goals. S/he will share supervision of two employees and manage development department contractors.

PHC is seeking a dynamic leader to facilitate the implementation of our Strategic Development Plan and to take us to the next level. The primary focus of the Director of Development will be to develop an exciting culture of philanthropy at PHC, and to ensure the success of the annual campaign, a new major gifts program, corporate partnerships and government and foundation relationships.

The position requires superlative people skills, poise, discretion, finely honed development and communications skills, strategic thinking and collaboration.   • Oversee the implementation and continuous refinement of the development plan.
  • Generate annual goals and objectives; prepare and monitor development budget.
  • Work in partnership with the senior leadership team on advocacy efforts.
  • Supervise donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship activities.
  • Oversee corporate and foundation giving initiaves.
  • Plan and implement donor cultivation and fundraising events.
  • Develop and implement planned giving and earned income strategies.
  • Participate in setting overall organizational strategies and direction.


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Substantial prior successful experience with development, fundraising, sales or
  • Passion for the humanities and personal values consistent with PHC’s mission
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to speak and write messages for different audiences
  • Experience working with boards and committees in non-profit organizations
  • Willingness to travel throughout Pennsylvania
