Surrey Services for Seniors (Surrey) served nearly 8,000 in FY15 providing services and programming to keep seniors living with independence and dignity and continue as active members of the community. Surrey has an annual budget of approximately $5 million, the majority of which is funded by private donations.

Surrey is committed to mobilizing greater resources, expanding its reach, and increasing programming for the most active to the most frail seniors in Chester and Delaware Counties in southeastern Pennsylvania.  Surrey provides transportation, in-home services, information, lifelong learning, nutrition support, fitness opportunities and health education and a range of other programs and services to older adults. Surrey has 3 senior community centers in Delaware County in addition to its headquarters, located in a vibrant new building in Devon, PA.

To support its vision, Surrey is seeking to fill the newly created position, Vice President of Marketing and Development. The ideal Vice President of Marketing and Development will have achieved success developing throughout his/her career a combination of mature and steady leadership skills.  S/he will become a key member of Surrey’s senior leadership team and support its strategic plan through a dynamic and well planned, multi-faceted Major Gifts, Annual Giving, Planned Giving, and Foundation and Marketing strategy. The VP will be charismatic, inspiring, and collaborative in working with internal and external partners including staff, Board members, volunteers, and donors.

S/he will play a significant role in the success of Surrey Services, overseeing a set of integrated strategies to attract private investment and to enable the growth of the organization and the thousands of seniors it serves. Surrey’s fundraising team has successfully cultivated a diverse range of donors and partners to engage in its mission. Small and large donors are the backbone of its philanthropic program. The VP will have the opportunity to evaluate current strategies, consolidate strengths, develop and implement a plan to expand both grassroots and high-level engagement and revenues, and meet or exceed the annual fundraising goal.

Personal knowledge of individual donors and donors with capacity in the Chester and Delaware County region is preferred as is grantee knowledge and demonstrated success in human services.   Additionally, sophisticated understanding of how to design a donor program to generate revenue and build a major gifts pipeline and an outstanding major gift fundraising record are essential.

REPORTS TO: President & CEO

POSITION STATUS: Full time, exempt



Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President of Marketing and Development is responsible for all development, marketing and communications activities for the organization.

S/he will be a fundraising professional with substantial and successful experience in a program of significant reputation and be thoroughly knowledgeable in the full range of advancement techniques. The VP will understand best practices nationally and will possess the vision necessary to develop, execute, and articulate an aggressive multi-pronged fundraising plan that will guide the program for the next several years.

The VP will articulate the mission, goals, and aspirations of Surrey, engage with leadership to leverage their involvement, create synergies with the board of directors, staff, and personify the degree of professionalism and level of productivity that Surrey expects of all of its leaders.  The VP will be a primary and effective advocate for Surrey and its needs, connecting with prospects, donors, and volunteers to state Surrey’s mission and demonstrate a passion and history of success to close major gifts, manage a capital campaign, and have knowledge of planned giving.  The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Surrey’s visibility, impact, and financial resources.

The VP is responsible for oversight of all efforts of the marketing team, shaping the development of the strategic marketing effort and the growth of Surrey’s brand, building awareness and demand across a range of audiences. The VP will work closely with other senior team members to support program areas and ensure growth in new and current markets.

The primary purpose of the Vice President of Marketing and Development is to generate significant annual revenue through the management of: private individual and foundations (major gifts and annual giving programs), special event fundraisers, a planned giving program, relationships with foundations, expanding and diversifying Surrey’s donor base/pipeline working closely with other team members to secure funding for new and existing initiatives.  Strong focus will be placed on expanding unrestricted development revenue, identifying new opportunities to support the overall mission of Surrey, and expanding awareness of Surrey throughout the region. In addition, the VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.  It is expected that the amount raised by Surrey will increase in future years as the VP systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.  Another key aspect of this position will be to strategically direct and oversee marketing and business development efforts to support other organizational revenue drivers, including In-Home Services, Center-Based Programming and Services, and Transportation.



  • Communicates the Surrey mission and culture to all key stakeholders including staff, board members, volunteers, older adult members, donors, and partners.
  • Accountable for all aspects of marketing, development, and communications to achieve Surrey’s strategic and vision.
  • Effectively leads Development and Marketing teams, consultants (grant writers) and volunteers to maximize their talent and opportunities, and create a high-energy, focused, high delivery team.
  • Provides outstanding leadership, management, task delegation, facilitation, and networking skills, including the ability to make prompt and effective decisions and to think strategically.
  • Represents Surrey in select high-level partnerships, speaking engagements and other externally-facing activities.
  • Represents Marketing and Development as part of Surrey’s strategic planning process.

Donor Outreach/Cultivation/Stewardship:

  • Works with the President and CEO to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, and individual giving.
  • Supports and partners with the President and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Finance to develop and implement Surrey’s financial strategy.
  • Has primary responsibility for development and execution of all grant requests.
  • Oversees research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position Surrey ahead of major funding changes or trends
  • Monitors all donor information; provides and presents statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
  • Develops and implements a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Oversees identification and securing of in-kind donations of goods and services for special events and office needs.
  • Liaises and develops relations with appropriate community leaders, business and government to expand the reputation of the organization and to seek or expand new funding sources.
  • Leads and manages the remainder of the current ongoing campaign and strategizes, plans and launches the next campaign to support the organization.
  • Manages the Surrey Legacy Planned Giving program.
  • Supports and oversees various volunteer Development Committees.
  • Responsible for the cost effectiveness and financial aspects of the department.


  • Works closely with the membership team and program areas to develop and implement strategies to support member retention, drive audience engagement, and ensure growth in current and new markets using appropriate marketing vehicles
  • Oversees marketing/communications including providing strategic direction, consistent branding and messaging, public relations, advertising, expos, seminars, collateral materials, market research, website design and content.
  • Continually monitors market to evaluate the timely adjustment of marketing strategy and plan to meet changing markets and competitive conditions.
  • Ensures the organization’s visibility in the community.
  • Develops marketing strategy designed to meet strategic plan and organizational and departmental revenue goals, to include advertising, website, collateral materials, media plan, community awareness and outreach, annual report, communications vehicles, and public relations.
  • Works with Board Committee Chair to facilitate marketing outreach committee for expert input and to effectively meet marketing objectives.
  • Advises and supports volunteer-based special event committees with respect to print, publicity and media contacts.
  • Evaluates and assures spending of marketing dollars are maximized and consistent with goals.
  • Cultivates press relationships. Represents Surrey in the community and communicates Surrey successes and needs.
  • Oversees Surrey’s social media strategy including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Ensures that all communications are of the highest quality standards, reflect a positive image and address the issues and interests of specific audiences.


  • Manages the overall plan for meeting the budgeted fundraising goals incorporating direct mail, e-blasts, special events, and face-to-face solicitations.
  • Assists the President in organizational and financial development.
  • Provides and oversees staff support to appropriate Board activities including the Board Leadership Campaign, corporate solicitation, planned giving, etc.
  • Manages and delivers regular reports and analysis on funding plans and results and marketing effectiveness.


  • Experience working with program teams and constructing, articulating, directing, and implementing the strategic marketing and development activities in a fast-paced non-profit membership organization.
  • Ability to think strategically and critically and prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Advanced analytical judgment.
  • Outcome-focused with the ability to effectively track and evaluate impact of efforts and to successfully lead projects to completion, according to schedule.
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills, including the capacity to relate on a highly personal level to a very wide variety of prospects, donors, and volunteers.
  • A successful track record in managing multiple projects from initiation to completion in an organization of at least similar size to Surrey.
  • Direct operational experience in the areas of comprehensive development campaigns, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, donor relations/stewardship, corporate and foundation relations, and development services.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully building and executing marketing campaigns from concept to launch; can provide a proven track record of generating high quality marketing materials and press attention.
  • In-depth knowledge of national marketing principles and consumer behavior.
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Surrey, one who takes initiative.
