National History Day is an annual, collaborative, award-winning academic program that enhances student education and achievement. This program encourages 6th – 12th graders to undertake primary source historical research that fits into a national theme. The 2017 Theme is Taking a Stand in History.

The National History Day (NHD) coordinator organizes, manages and implements all aspects of the NHD competition for participating 6th-12th graders from Chester and Delaware Counties. The 2017 competition will be held March 24 and 25.  As the key member of the Chester County Historical Society (CCHS) team, the NHD coordinator ensures a successful event to which teachers and students will return in succeeding years. This is a seasonal job averaging 25-hours per week, from date of hire through June 2017.

The coordinator works with approximately 450 students, educators and administrators from 20 schools; recruits and trains over 120 volunteer judges; and collaborates with the NHD regional and state coordinators. Building on previous NHD partnerships, the coordinator works with nearby West Chester borough institutions and offices to reserve needed competition space, and manages all technology and equipment needs for the NHD five competition categories (papers, exhibits, documentaries, websites and performances)

  • Interest in history education desirable; events planning experience preferred.
  • Preference given to those with prior knowledge ofD and NHD contests.


  • Flexibility in dealing with people of all ages, in what can be tense competitive event
  • Skill in serving as CCHS’s public face for an important community event
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and organizational skills
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships among staff, students, educators, judges and volunteers
  • Has or is eligible to obtain Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This is a partial list of tasks. The coordinator should be an adaptable person who can pick up duties as assigned.)

Coordinate event communications and facilities use including

  • Use and update online and postal mailing lists for students, educators and judges
  • Assist with student and judge registration, both prior to and during March program
  • Event-related press releases
  • Website maintenance and development for NHD activities and resources
  • Coordinate and manipulate website data to produce judge teams and scheduling formats
  • Inventory and coordinate needed contest technology, being mindful of growth in documentary and website categories
  • Assess whether it makes sense to produce a 2017 hard-copy program with advertisements for food providers, location sponsors, equipment lenders, EITC sponsors and financial sponsors

Management of registered students (450+), teachers & administrators (32) and parents:

  • Master expertise with state level compliance for required protocols and procedures; coordination with other regional and PA state level coordinators
  • Ensure compliance with state requirements for Child Safety with judges, volunteers and locations; obtain child clearances for critical volunteers from state agencies
  • Train, encourage and assist teachers with project implementation, locate resources / experts for teachers / students, work with students to understand thesis statement concept and improve projects
  • Supervise tabulations during contest so student work is evaluated fairly; oversee required input of first-round results, run-off candidates, and determination of regional winners
  • Student recognition for participation, awards and certificates; work with first Local History Awards for CCHS; work with local expert for student interviews
  • Implement two awards ceremonies; one on Friday (senior) and one on Saturday (junior).

Management of Volunteers and Judges (120):

  • Develop recruitment & training materials for local contest; adapt from national materials for content
  • Lead multiple training session in Feb 2017
  • Prepare judge training packets, communications, thank you letters, etc.

Community Presence:

  • Liaison with community groups, sponsors, site locations
  • Solicit speakers and local dignitaries for awards ceremony
  • Communicate with all stakeholders the logistics of event: parking, registration, food, timeline
