Director of Education: United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey

This Director-level position provides strategic direction and leads the development and execution of education strategies that drive results to improve end of 3rd grade reading indicators using the Results Based Accountability framework. The Director assists with development and implementation of early education policy initiatives, older youth education initiatives, including successful transition and more, grant-making and the overall organizational engagement related to education. The Director also provides direct supervision and coaching of education unit staff, and is an integral member of the Impact Department’s management team. This position has direct and significant forward facing community relationships that have a major impact on the department’s goals and success as well as having major impact on the financial and operational performance of the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Operating Responsibilities
• Manage one or more groups encompassing a broad scope and significant variety/complexity or direct major programs/projects through the results based accountability framework. .
• Ensure unit operating plans are integrated with departmental operating and strategic plans
• Participate in formulating strategies, business plans and objectives for the organization in the context of the results based accountability framework

2. Administrative Responsibilities/People Management
• Responsible for organizing, selecting, developing and directing subordinate staff, or directing program/project staff
• Assist managers with the coaching, mentoring and overall development of their subordinates and project future staffing needs to ensure the continued viability of the work

3. Organizational Relationships
• Represent department with outside entities as appropriate
• Ensure the integration of unit activities are managed with the rest of the department
• Lead and/or participate in cross-functional and cross-product/technology teams to facilitate integration
• Participate in negotiations with customers and clients in establishing mutual goals.
• Accountable for meeting customers needs

BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Demonstrates required skills or experience on core competencies in accordance with the UWGPSNJ Competency and Results Based Accountability Framework.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline required. Graduate degree in relevant field preferred.
• A minimum of 5-7 years relevant work experience.
• A minimum of five (5) years experience supervising staff in a complex social services organization
• Exceptional ability to develop, lead and participate in teams.
• Proven ability to work in a participative and collaborative manner, to interact well with a diverse range of people, and to constructively give and receive feedback.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, measure and report upon quantitative and qualitative results.
• Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and to effectively manage, organize and prioritize projects and workload with attention to detail and strong follow-through
• Decision making style that balances the need to build consensus with making decisions quickly and efficiently.
• Ability to influence and persuade key stakeholders, peers, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and function in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and presentation skills
• Microsoft Office skills and experience required.
• Valid drivers license & insurance and/or reliable transportation required for out-of-office travel as required by the position.

DESIRED SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Knowledge and experience in the field of early childhood education particularly related to literacy development and knowledge and experience with older youth programs.
• Knowledge of the health and human service sector as partners in the development of family and child early education supports and development
• Knowledge and experience with issue and results based frameworks
• Strong relationship management, convening and community building skills
