The executive director:

  • Leads, manages, plans, implements and monitors all aspects of the Darlington Arts Center (DAC) a provider of school and outreach programs for the visual and performing arts.
  • Provides effective leadership and management of DAC’s human and financial resources consistent with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors in order to achieve the Center’s mission and vision.
  • Is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the organization, including planning; operations; budgeting and financial management, fund raising, marketing; public relations and community engagement.

Duties include providing impetus and support for the Board of Directors, participating with the Board in developing the organization’s vision and strategic plan. Assuring that the Board and its committees have the information they need to work effectively on behalf of the organization. Recruit, hire, motivate, supervise, evaluates and provide leadership to a high caliber professional staff and the contractually engaged teaching artists. Develop and maintain an environment that nurtures the talents of the students who participate in DAC programs. Steersfund-raising efforts, including writing grant applications and reports, solicitation of individual donations, and meetings with major supporters of the organization.

Serves as a chief spokesperson and represents DAC throughout the community. Encourages partnerships and collaborations that advance the mission of DAC, while providing the best possible educational and artistic experience for DAC families. As the primary “face” of DAC to the community, establishes and maintains a strong public relations image. Works with DAC staff, as required, on Center-wide or inter-programmatic activities and projects.


  • Minimum Education Required: Requires a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Music Education or equivalent experience
  • Minimum Experience Required: Requires at least five years of proven success in executive or senior management of a not-for-profit music or arts organization and at least seven years of relevant work experience.
  • Baseline Knowledge & Skills: Must have a strong working knowledge of music education, artists and repertoire, and musical performance experience is considered an asset. Requires a deep commitment to music, visual and performing arts education and experience working with the community as an advocate for arts education and as an enthusiastic fundraiser.
  • Physical Requirements: Able to travel from time to time both locally and otherwise as needed. Good physical condition for sitting, standing, walking, hearing, seeing, lifting up to 10 lbs. Valid driver’s license and ability to drive preferred.
