About Norris Square Neighborhood Project

The mission of Norris Square Neighborhood Project (NSNP) is to promote positive change through youth education, community leadership, green spaces, the arts and the celebration of Latinx cultures. NSNP offers youth and community residents a safe space to make culture come alive and explore social issues, through academics, art, and urban farming. For over forty years youth, through NSNP, have developed their leadership skills, built relationships, and created art. Annually NSNP serves over 60 high school age youth through our after school and summer programs as well as community members through our six culturally themed garden spaces.

Position Overview

The Executive Director is primarily responsible for ensuring the strategic direction and financial health of a multi-faceted, community-based nonprofit organization serving youth. The ED reports to the Board of Directors and maintains overarching leadership and accountability for distilling, communicating and advancing a clear, consensus-driven vision, while also achieving tangible outcomes in the areas of planning, budget development, resource development, staff management, program administration, and community building.

Responsibilities

Please note the percentage indicators below represent an estimate of how much time each week will be spent fulfilling these functions, especially during the first year.

Leadership / Management (35%)

  • Support a strong Board of Directors through transparent communication, participation in board meetings and providing information to committees.
  • In collaboration with the Board of Director, management team, staff members and youth, lead and manage a successful, evolving organization that upholds the mission of NSNP.
  • Provide a collaborative leadership presence while fostering a dynamic, innovative, values-driven environment for all.
  • Ensure ongoing strategic planning, programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent, high-quality delivery of services across the organization.
  • Develop, coach, motivate and retain management level staff.
  • Maintain an organizational commitment to and accomplishment of honesty, openness and transparency in all that NSNP does.
  • Ensure that a participatory management process is utilized at all levels in the organization and that high levels of staff morale are maintained.
  • Provide necessary support and expertise in creating efficiencies and identifying opportunities for strategic growth and development.

Financial Management (20%)

  • Working closely with the Board Finance Committee and the bookkeeping consultant, to ensure that NSNP operates at a positive cash flow in the short run and is structured in the long run to be financially sustainable.
  • Partner with Senior Management Team and bookkeeping consultant to develop the organization’s annual budget; analyze revenue and expenditure trends; recommend appropriate budget levels; and support expenditure controls.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate fiscal controls; oversee annual audit process.

Fundraising and Revenue Generation (30%)

  • In collaboration with the Marketing and Development Manager and Development Committee, design, implement and monitor the annual fundraising development plan, outlining goals, activities and timeline for completion.
  • Ensure diverse revenue streams.
  • Strategically identify and engage donor prospects and corporate partners. Personally engage in the solicitation of foundation grants, corporate gifts, and major individual gifts.
  • Ensure the continued growth of NSNP’s existing earned revenue streams and continue to seek out new opportunities for earned revenue.
  • Provide support to the Board of Directors in planning, developing, and achieving Board led fundraising activities and goals.

Community Outreach & Mobilization (15%)

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of internal and external communications — from web presence to external relations with relevant government agencies, funders, the community, media and the Philadelphia region.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the organization in the Philadelphia community and beyond. Cultivate exceptional, transparent and trusted working relationships with outside agencies, stakeholders, coalition partners and more.
  • Actively work with the Board to strategically expand membership through the recruitment of community leaders who bring varied talents, expertise and connections, and who effectively represent the organization.
  • Demonstrate an ability to bring people together around a common language and understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion. Strive to support and uplift all people within the communities we serve.

Qualifications & Characteristics

Required

  • A deep appreciation for the mission and values of Norris Square Neighborhood Project, as well as a thorough understanding of the unique and complex community development and social justice issues facing neighborhood residents especially youth.
  • At least five years of senior management experience with a strong track record of developing strategies for growth.
  • A dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive work environment
  • At least three years of development, fundraising and / or other revenue-generating experience, including a demonstrated understanding of earned income models.
  • Familiarity with local and regional private and public funding sources.
  • Innovative in spirit, values-driven, self-directed, confident and action-oriented.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and culturally proficient communication skills. Adaptable, accessible, compassionate and professional in demeanor.

Preferred

  • Bilingual/bicultural, with a proficiency in Spanish.
  • Knowledge or familiarity of arts and culture, and gardening programs in Philadelphia.
  • Experience in and knowledge of the Norris Square / West Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.

  • Salary commensurate with experience but within the following range: $60,000 to $70,000 / year.
