Associate Director of Productions and Programs: Philadelphia Young Playwrights

Philadelphia Young Playwrights seeks a full-time Associate Director of Productions and Programs to help conceptualize, administrate, and execute our public productions and performances, and to conceptualize and manage our annual slate of community partnerships and out-of-school programs.

The Associate Director supports our student playwrights, collaborating professional artists, teaching artists, and community partners. The Associate Director produces the bulk of Young Playwrights’ page-to-stage programs, including a fall school tour and a spring public production of our Young Voices Monologue Festival, which reaches approximately 1000 students in the classroom and generates over 800 student submissions to the festival each year.  The Associate Director also produces our annual Saturday Reading Series and our Partner Productions, where 30 – 40 students a year enter a new play development process alongside theatre professionals to prepare their play to be shared with public audiences at various venues around Philadelphia.  Additionally, the Associate Director works alongside the Director of Education to conceptualize and manage our slate of special programs and community partnerships.  Annually these programs include the stewardship of our Resident Playwrights program, the stewardship and facilitation of our Advanced Summer Playwriting programs, and the stewardship of our Playwriting and the Art of Storytelling collaboration with Theatre Horizon for playwrights with Autism.  Annually Young Playwrights will offer 2 – 4 additional programming opportunities for students which change from year to year, ranging from masterclasses to special topics residencies.  Past partners for these special collaborations have included Cliveden of the National Trust, the Kimmel Center, Wolf Performing Arts Center, and The Colored Girls Museum.

Day-to-day tasks include: managing Young Playwrights’ database of professional talent, and stewarding the contract and payment process for all productions, out-of-school programs, and special projects;  in collaboration with the Director of Education, hold annual auditions, conduct interviews, and provide training for professional artists new to the organization; for our productions, serving on applicable literary committees, stewarding playwrights and families, scheduling rehearsals and productions, planning and facilitating dramaturgy retreats, casting, hiring and supervising dramaturgs and directors, and coordinating with communications staff to storytell the project; for our special projects, alongside the Director of Education, collaborating with community partners on goals, curriculum, and outcomes, leading student outreach and registration efforts, stewarding playwrights and families, providing day-to-day administrative support to professional artists and teaching artists, conducting program evaluations, and coordinating with communications staff to storytell the project.  Additional opportunities to serve in production roles (director, dramaturg, designer, etc.) and teaching artist roles on productions and special projects as assigned and as qualified.

The ideal candidate is deeply passionate about working with students in the Philadelphia School District and throughout the Philadelphia metro area; is passionate about producing and new play development, working with professional artists, partnering and collaborating with other area organizations, and building new programs and initiatives; is detail-oriented, comfortable managing multiple projects and timelines, and is mindful of organizational and administrative needs within a fast-paced, busy work environment; and firmly believes in the transformative power of the arts to improve students, teachers, schools, and communities.  Strong verbal and digital communications skills, and computer literacy, are required. Experience in theatre production and teaching artistry is required.  A passion for theater is required.  Experience with spreadsheets and data management is a plus, but not required.

Excellent work environment and benefits. The budgeted salary for this position is in the mid-30s. Some evening and Saturday hours are required to be a staff presence at productions and out-of-school time programs.
