Director of Foundation Relations: The Barnes Foundation

Description: The Barnes Foundation is seeking a Director of Foundation Relations to manage all aspects of fundraising from foundations and public agencies. In addition to responsibility to forecast, track and meet institutional giving annual operating goals for restricted and unrestricted contributed revenue, the Director will also carry a portfolio of funding opportunities for special projects, including the capital campaign.

Established as an educational institution the Barnes Foundation carries out its mission by promoting appreciation of the arts and horticultural science, through the preservation, presentation, and interpretation of the collections of Albert C. and Laura L. Barnes.

Celebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth, and quality, the Barnes Foundation’s art collection includes works by some of the greatest European and American masters of impressionism, post-impressionist, and early modern art, as well as African sculpture, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American textiles, metalwork, and more. The 12-acre Arboretum contains over 3,000 species of woody plants and trees.

The Foundation engages diverse audiences through its exceptional collections and related high-quality programs that reflect a broad range of periods and cultures and build on the founders’ innovative educational vision of transforming lives through the arts and horticulture.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development and execution of fund-raising strategies for established and new donors necessary to meet foundation, corporate foundation, and government annual contributed revenue goals. Develops fund-raising strategies necessary to secure funding from institutional donors for all budgeted activities, pan-institutionally, including campaign and endowment initiatives or special projects that are incremental to the operating budget in special cases.
  • Works with staff across all program areas, including curatorial, publications, education, public programs, audience engagement, and others, to identify and articulate funding needs and priorities and match those with grant opportunities.
  • Manages a current portfolio of institutional donors, coordinating solicitations and communications, for activities as described above.
  • Creates, implements, and updates an annual plan designed to solicit and generate support to meet revenue goals. Maintains annual grants calendar and accurate records of grant funders in Raisers Edge, including detailed records of action steps related to stewardship, meeting notes, documents, and other substantive communications.
  • Conceptualizes and oversees, writes, and edits effective proposals, reports, correspondence and other accompanying materials for funders.
  • Manages stewardship of all institutional grants including coordinating with other departments regarding the purpose and use of funds to conform with donor intent; manages organizational programmatic data collection and analysis to generate reports for funders; responds to donor requests and requirements for data and other items as needed; represents or assures the representation of the Barnes at donor meetings, briefings and other events as needed.
  • Ensures timely reporting of all narrative and financial reports for institutional funders.
  • Works closely with program staff to gain the necessary knowledge of programs and services to effectively communicate to funders through proposals, reports, meetings and site visits.
  • Works closely with the Director of Finance and the finance office to produce budgets for proposals and reports on grants.  Stays current on spending against funded activities, is responsible for alerting the Sr. Director of Development to budgetary changes that affect funded activities.
  • Plans and implements strategic growth in foundation giving and is current on potential funding sources for future programs and other institutional initiatives.
  • As directed by the Senior Director of Development, participates in short- and long-term departmental planning initiatives including:  annual budget preparation, performance analysis, tracking, and reporting; team preparation of an annual plan of action that includes timelines, targets, resource requirements and expected outcomes.
  • Represents the department as needed with internal and external constituencies to inform them about the Barnes, its programs and fund-raising priorities.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience as a senior development officer at a cultural or educational institution with primary responsibility for grant writing, proposal submission and reporting, and relationship management
  • A successful track record of proactive identification, cultivation and solicitation of outright major gifts from foundations (professional, corporate and family), and public agencies; capital campaign experience desirable
  • A willingness to engage a broad personal and professional network of individuals and institutional leaders as prospects for and donors to the Barnes. Ability to integrate and leverage advancement activities across the Foundation; ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team and promote teamwork and cooperation
  • Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communications skills
  • Minimum of 2 years management experience
  • Ability to prioritize, make independent decisions and work well under deadlines, exercising confidentiality, good judgment, diplomacy and tact
  • Knowledge of marketing principles, current technology, and emerging e-commerce fundraising techniques
  • Computer literacy including competency with Microsoft Office software and Internet and database management experience; knowledge of and skill in using Raiser’s Edge preferred
