Women Against Abuse is currently recruiting for a Vice President of Advancement!

WAA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency, is Philadelphia’s leading domestic violence advocate and service provider and among the largest domestic violence agencies in the country. The mission of WAA is to provide quality, compassionate and nonjudgmental services in a manner that fosters self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence and to lead the struggle to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education. With over 150 staff, WAA serves over 15,000 individuals each year through emergency residential services (2 – 100 bed safe havens and 15 transitional housing apartments), legal services, hotline counseling, aftercare community based services, prevention & education, and advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensure that the Advancement Department continues to diversify the organization’s revenue sources by increasing gains in individual and corporate support, retaining donors, elevating the profile of the organization, and expanding foundation support to include national private funders. Expand WAA’s major donor program and Advocates in Action Giving Circle, and continue to establish the nascent 1976 Legacy Society planned giving program. Build a robust framework for major gifts. Facilitate donor cultivation meetings and analyzing data to inform fundraising strategies. Solicit major and planned gifts, and cultivate major donor. Prepare Executive Director and Board leadership for donor visits with detailed prospect reports and strategy. Oversee the development and implementation of all fundraising strategies and activities that will support the immediate and long-term goals of the Agency, including appeals, donor choice campaigns, and capital campaigns. Ensure continued success and growth of the Agency’s hallmark fundraising event – Dish It Up. Ensure the ongoing integration of fundraising and communications messages. Develop strategies that would enhance and ensure sustainable contributions and funding sources, and maintain a clear case for support for individuals. Provide leadership, direction and support to the Advancement Team. Ensure quality community engagement and outreach efforts. Serve as the organization’s media liaison and oversee crisis communications, with support from the Senior Communications Specialist. Serve as the primary board liaison for fundraising efforts, including participation on the Development Committee and Honorary Council. Maintain and continue to enhance Donor Acceptance Policies and Procedures, as needed. Participate in all meetings, as required. All responsibilities are implemented according to our mission and values and according to Agency standards, including the Sanctuary Model ®.


  1. A Master’s Degree in Communications, Nonprofit or Public Administration or a related field is required.
  2. A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in fundraising and five (5) years’ experience in public relations is required.
  3. Successful track record of securing major individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and planned gifts is required.
  4. Familiarity with application of prospect research tools and moves management.
  5. A minimum of five (5) years of management/supervisory experience is required.
  6. Demonstrated excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills are required.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization is required.
  8. Demonstrated ability to effectively represent the organization is required.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population is required.
  10. Affinity for or experience in working on domestic violence issues is strongly preferred.
  11. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office software, Outlook, Word, & Excel.
