Development and Communications Associate: Philadelphia Young Playwrights

Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP) is looking for a talented writer and dynamic thinker to join our Development and Communications team. This full-time position will take the lead on all grant writing and reporting in support of PYP’s mission to tap the potential of youth and inspire learning through playwriting. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate an ability to think strategically and to write concisely, connecting the dots between PYP’s programs, their impacts, and the bigger picture of community need and philanthropic trends.

In addition to grant writing, the Development and Communications Associate will work closely with the Executive Director to support strategic fundraising initiatives—from design to implementation—including prospect research, donor messaging, and donor stewardship. The position will provide additional writing support for communications efforts, including social media and web content.

This position includes many opportunities for significant growth within the organization. For the individual with a background in theater, the position offers additional opportunities to intersect with PYP programs (as a teaching artist, classroom actor, production dramaturg, etc.), when possible.

The Development and Communications Associate reports directly to the Managing Director and works with the Executive Director and Connectivity Manager.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work cross-organizationally to write grants, complete reports, and develop donor appeals and other development communications
  • Identify and research new qualified funding/granting/donor prospects and opportunities;
  • Coordinate fundraising with programs and communications/marketing to achieve program alignment, message consistency, and effectiveness;
  • Track program activities to generate reports and evaluations for meetings, presentations to funders, board of directors and sponsors;
  • Ensure and track compliance with grant agreements and arrange for appropriate funder recognition;
  • Support fundraising and cultivation events and campaigns;
  • Support creation of content for website and social media
  • Maintain orderly institutional donor files and records

Desired Skill-Set:

  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, with ability to coordinate multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to produce strategic and compelling writing for a variety of different audiences
  • Desire to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills;
  • Able to work proactively and independently;
  • Discretion and confidentiality with sensitive donor information;
  • Ability to attend performances, workshops, and special events as needed—sometimes on evenings and weekends;
  • Though not required, a passion for theater, new play development, and/or arts education is a plus

Excellent work environment and benefits. The budgeted salary for this position is $40,000.
