Chief Executive Officer: Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter

The Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to guide and help our organization to grow, providing leadership for the Chapter in pursuing our mission to support those living with lupus and their families.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Reaching out and meeting with corporate and community leaders to secure sponsorship and partnership through funding for research, increasing awareness, education and community support.
  • Conduct analysis of results of previous activities to determine which were successful enough to be repeated and/or expanded or deleted.
  • Select, manage and evaluate staff to meet the duties of each position. Manage the performance of staff to ensure goals are met and proficiency in meeting job duties.
  • Recruit volunteers for Board membership and committees, and provide expectations and goals for those participating.
  • Manage and participate with staff and volunteers to secure sponsorships and partnerships within the tri-state region.
  • Represent the Chapter in all civic activities in the tri-state region to raise awareness of the effects of lupus.
  • Oversee the financial status of the organization including developing long and short range financial plans, monitoring the budget and ensuring sound financial controls are in place.
  • Oversee fundraising activities which includes donor cultivation, grant proposals, etc., and the maintenance of fundraising records, budget and expenditures to be most effective in supporting goals.
  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications – from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities, particularly as they relate to major donors, foundations, government agencies and corporations.
  • Enlist guidance and counsel of the board to develop strategic plans to reach Chapter goals.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of progress against goals, and make changes as necessary.
  • Provide oversight to insure all legal and technical requirements of the Chapter are adhered to.
  • Provide liaison with the national LFA for updates on activities, strategies, and new developments in research and treatment.

Position Prerequisites:

  • Typically the position will be held by an individual holding an advance degree in business, marketing, community or public health or organizational management. Specific education in non-profit organization management is desirable. Also familiarity with QuickBooks and Donor Drive would be desirable.
  • Experience of at least 5-7 years in non-profit management and/or fund development with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
  • Past history must demonstrate success in meeting goals of employer organization.
  • Bi-lingual capacity (English/Spanish) a plus.

  • As with any non-profit organization CEO, the person must be motivated and committed to supporting the organization and those who benefit from its mission.
  • He or she must be tenacious and show determination in the face of less than optimum response from organizations failing to engage through funding or participation.
  • Have the ability to think critically and strategically, but objectively in planning and making changes to achieve goals and objectives.
  • He or she must have an understanding of, and ability to communicate through any oral, written, visual or audio means.
  • The CEO must also be able to provide professional guidance on skills development of staff and volunteers.
