Program Manager: The Knight Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund

The Local News Transformation Fund, a joint initiative of the Knight Foundation and Lenfest Institute, is hiring a program manager to help implement operational objectives and evaluate the fund’s impact.

The Local News Transformation Fund is designed to strengthen local journalism at scale, with a focus on journalistic excellence and serving the information needs of communities in the U.S. By fostering innovation and accelerating transformation, it seeks to address the decline at the state and local level, where news businesses have been most challenged and where diversity and inclusion are most at issue. This initiative builds on strong results from existing leadership programs under the current Knight-Lenfest News Initiative, creates a new national hub to promote shared infrastructure and resource strategies, technology and revenue solutions, and positions Philadelphia as a model of a thriving local news ecosystem that could be replicated across the U.S. This Fund currently has $20 million in assets to be spent on grants and programs over five years starting in 2019.

This position, based in Philadelphia, will report to the Fund’s Principals Group, comprised of Knight and Lenfest executives who oversee the Fund.

Things we look for in a successful candidate:

  • A skilled, agile project manager.
  • Ability to analyze/assess impact, situations and data.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with nonprofit program management, evaluation and reporting preferred.
  • Familiarity with the news industry is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement operational objectives, including providing informal and formal updates on the activities of the Fund and its grantees.
  • Develop and maintain an evidence-based approach for assessing the Fund’s impact in the field.
  • Collaborate with program leads and grantees to define project outcomes and develop assessment plans for new proposals.
  • Manage and coordinate grant applications to the Fund for review and approval by Knight and Lenfest. Grantees may include institutions and others desiring to execute the Fund’s activities and goals.
  • Assist with the raising of money from multiple sources in support of the Fund’s mission in close coordination with Knight and Lenfest’s other development and fundraising activities.
  • Support communications strategy for the Fund’s operations and keep its digital presence up to date to communicate progress.
  • Manage and track the Fund’s budget.
