Business Development Manager: Starfinder Foundation

The Business Development Manager is charged with growing the facility-generated earned revenues that are a crucial source of support for Starfinder’s mission and programs. Starfinder’s facility, which includes a newly-renovated 28,000 square foot indoor turf field, is a home base for its soccer and education programs and a second home to many of the youth we serve. Currently, earned income operations take place during non-program hours.

The ideal candidate for this position is a social entrepreneur: he/she has experience in business development and wishes to put their business acumen to work for a good cause. Every dollar of earned revenue generated by this position will contribute to creating and sustaining high-quality youth programs. There is significant opportunity for growth in this role, as Starfinder’s facility has yet to achieve its full income-generating potential.

Currently, the majority of Starfinder’s earned income is generated by field rentals, pick up soccer, and birthday parties. We believe there is tremendous potential to both expand these uses and to develop new activities, events, and programs to fill underutilized field time.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with entrepreneurial instincts and a track record of achieving ambitious revenue goals. They will be inspired by the opportunity to grow Starfinder’s existing earned income streams into a more diverse portfolio of activities that are fully integrated with our social impact brand.

The Business Development Manager will join a staff team that is passionate about Starfinder’s mission, strives for excellence in their work, and loves to laugh (and eat) together. All major events require an “all hands on deck” approach.

Starfinder is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that promotes positive youth development through high-quality youth sports programming. We use soccer as a tool to provide the opportunities and support youth need to be successful in their lives and to become healthy contributors to their communities. We work with youth ages 6-18 in underserved and communities throughout Philadelphia. We offer participants an experience through which they can excel in athletics while practicing life and leadership skills in a safe, fun, supportive, and challenging environment. Starfinder currently empowers over 900 children and teens annually through its programs at its indoor soccer and education facility in Manayunk and at community partner sites throughout the city.

The Business Development Manager is responsible for maximizing Starfinder’s earned income, especially as generated by its facility, in order to support its mission and long-term social impact goals. This includes conceptualizing and researching new opportunities, creating and managing budgets, managing project operations, drafting business plans, and managing implementation of all earned income activities. The Business Development Manager ensures that Starfinder’s mission is leveraged as a key part of all marketing, messaging, and communications. This position is a member of the senior management team and a key contributor to the development of institutional short- and long-term strategy and planning.

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Business Development: Secure and grow B2B partnerships, community partnerships, rentals, and event signups while ensuring outstanding customer service, problem solving, and providing logistical solutions.
  • Program & Event Management: Take the lead on developing and implementing income-generating programs and events – including ideation, design, implementation, marketing, sales, and scheduling with the goals of quality, profitability, and efficiency.
  • Business Operations: Ensure effective and efficient business operations through the use of business management tools, software, and systems; improve and expand those systems as needed to effectively manage growth.
  • Marketing: Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan that complements Starfinder’s mission-based communications strategy.
  • Staff Management: Hire, train, schedule, supervise, provide feedback to, and manage payroll for a team of Service Representatives. Prioritize the hiring, training and employment of Starfinder’s youth and alumni.
  • Facility Management: Monitor and maintain the safety, cleanliness, and integrity of the facility, in collaboration with the Business Services Manager, including fire safety and security systems. Ensure facility is clean, safe and welcoming for all guests.


  • At least 3-5 years of professional experience in a high-performance environment; Sports, Entertainment, Event Management, and/or Arena Industry experience preferred.
  • A proven ability to build and foster relationships with clients and drive new business.
  • Must be dynamic, forward-thinking, extremely analytical and well organized.
  • Must be comfortable engaging in a variety of communication modes (verbal, non-verbal, written, digital), possess strong active listening skills, and demonstrate commitment to exceptional customer relations.
  • Must produce results and be bottom-line oriented while being sensitive to people and values.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Passion for Starfinder’s mission, goals, and values a must.
  • Must be a fluent user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), CRM software, and social media tools for marketing purposes. Experience with Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) a plus.
  • Soccer and/or sports facility management a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Willingness to work irregular hours (some nights and weekends are required).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to: climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, climb ladders, and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The work is performed both indoors and out. While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
