Director of Programs: Bread and Roses Community Fund

Overview: 

Bread & Roses Community Fund (Bread & Roses) seeks an experienced, progressive professional to help advance the organization’s mission to support grassroots organizing for racial, social, and economic justice. Bread & Roses focuses on change, not charity™ with the expressed goal of radically transforming society to make it more equitable and accessible for all.

The Director of Programs will lead the organization’s programs, including management and direction of all community engagement and grantmaking programs, as well as provide leadership, oversight, and evaluation. The person in this role oversees program design and implementation and must be adept at developing management infrastructure related to the overall operations of grantmaking and other programs at Bread & Roses. The Director of Programs will engage movement leaders and community members in setting the strategic direction and guidelines for Bread & Roses’ grantmaking and other programs. Ideal candidates will have experience with models of distributive leadership, managing staff and volunteers, creating and managing budgets, compliance as related to grants, contracts and regulatory bodies, and cultivating relationships with partners and stakeholders, as well as a proven ability to represent organizations in a public-facing role. This position reports to the Executive Director of Bread & Roses, is a key member of the Bread & Roses senior council, and regularly prepares reports for the Board of Directors and relevant Board Committees.

Bread & Roses Community Fund directly engages community stakeholders through community-led grantmaking to determine the initiatives and organizations that it supports.

Candidate Profile:

An experienced decisionmaker who understands the evolution of community organizing and can skillfully build trust with staff, grantees, donors and other community stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have advanced professional experience in program design,  implementation, evaluation, and fiduciary oversight and be inspired by mission-driven, community-engaged work. Competitive candidates will have experience in program management, communications, change management, and people management. The successful candidate will be an experienced leader who is comfortable establishing professional boundaries and leading teams in a dynamically changing work environment.

Professional Characteristics: Required / Desired Skills

A minimum of 7 years of general management and/or program management and organizational leadership experience including relevant work experience in program assessment and evaluation.

Experience in program design, implementation, planning, and evaluation. Experience with grants management and compliance is strongly preferred.

Experience with volunteer management as well as community outreach and engagement activities.

Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, interpersonal skills, and good judgment.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, decision-making and organizational skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience with project management with an ability to manage multiple competing priorities organized around specific area benchmarks and goals.

Relationship building and reliability: welcomes feedback and can adapt to new ideas and priorities. Builds authentic relationships across lines of difference, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, gender identity, citizenship status, or other identities.

Familiarity and experience with the principles of racial equity, with an abiding belief that racial equity and social justice are paramount. Comfortable talking about race, gender, and other identities in plain (non-euphemistic) and specific terms. Continually able to hear, reflect, and act on feedback regarding identity and equity with the aim to learn.

Key Responsibilities: 

Program Management and Implementation

Advise and manage the Bread & Roses full slate of programs in partnership with community members and community organizations.

Manage the implementation efforts of a variety of programs and devise the overall strategy associated with Bread & Roses’ programs. All of Bread & Roses programs are led/spearheaded by external partners

Be responsive to the needs and direction of external program partners and community members/groups

Coaching programs to completion, including the management of  direct reports and delegating up in the management  of  programs

Management and general oversight over the reporting associated with programming budgets and grantmaking

Provide ongoing quality assurance and quality control in Bread & Roses’ programs through adherence to internal policies and procedures as well as external regulatory guidelines and requirements.

Program Oversight and Evaluation

Oversee and direct the strategic evaluation of all programs

Manage the community grantmaking processes, including oversight and leadership associated with the recruitment of community members to specific grantmaking efforts and initiatives

In collaboration with key staff, supervise, and evaluate all programs.

Ensure programs are properly documented, and that evaluation data is analyzed.

Supervise teams and managers in response to critical feedback.

Ensure that the stories, experiences and outcomes are captured from all programs and ultimately operationalized for development efforts.

Work closely with the executive director, senior council, and the board of directors to ensure programs are aligned with Bread & Roses’ vision, mission, and values as well as our theory of change.

Partnership and Stakeholder Management

Grant writing and grant reporting associated with partnerships and foundations

Skillfully manage relationships with vendors and consultants as related to Bread & Roses grantmaking and other programs.

Proactively engage with the Bread & Roses Director of Development to manage and maintain various partnerships and community engagement efforts associated with programming

Coordination of Program Activities 

Program coordination, including staff supervision and management

Consultant management, including conducting searches and contracting with consultants to meet the needs of ongoing programming

Volunteer management, including recruiting, planning, creating, and supervising committees associated with the programmatic function of the organization

Maintain a robust interface with the communications teams with respect to programming and maintaining partnerships.

Community Outreach & Engagement 

Cultivate and sustain a range of community partnerships and build relationships with stakeholders, including activities that are associated with grantmaking and programming

Manage and/or supervise the grantmaking processes associated with programming

Participate in meetings and collaborations with organizations supported through Bread & Roses’ network of social justice funds and resources.

Convening committees, partners, community members, and/or staff as needed

Compensation:

Organizational Information: 

The  Director of Programs will have 3 direct reports and reports directly to the Executive Director of Bread & Roses.

Notes / Additional Information: 

This is a full-time, in-person position based in our Philadelphia office with the potential for hybrid work as the team needs allow. Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and this position requires working occasional evenings and weekends. Bread & Roses has COVID-19 safety protocols in place and updates them in accordance with city, state, and federal guidelines.
